It is really an individual choice as to how much search engine optimization a business really needs. Often, rather than thinking in terms of how much do I need, the phrase could be better termed how little can I get away with.
Search engine optimization is all about increasing the visibility of your website by ensuring that through the clever use of certain keywords it ranks highly on the main search engines such as Yahoo, Google, or Ask.
A website needs as much search engine optimization as the operators feel is necessary. A certain school of thought will say that the mainstream companies and businesses will need considerably more search engine optimization simply because of the competition. The demand for the product or the wide-ranging availability of it means that the coveted number one ranking position as good as guarantees greater sales and increased profit, and so investment in search engine optimization should be a priority.
Obviously a large part of successful search engine optimization comes in the form of links, and these are generally outside of the webmasters control. Back-links are links done by the company in question in order to draw people to them, standard links are when other people link up to that website. If the link is attached to a relevant keyword for the website then it adds to the overall ranking points of the site and therefore improves its search engine optimization. Larger and more mainstream companies are likely to have more links than smaller or more obscure companies because of the number of websites and business involved in the field itself.
However, another school of thought would argue that the Internet has been of a greater benefit to the ‘little man’ the small private companies and businesses, who thanks to the advent of computers and the online world have been able to bring their product to a greater audience. The need therefore for high quality detailed search engine optimization is higher as people are less likely to do a direct search for that company. Coca Cola for example will get a lot of people searching directly for the brand name rather than carbonated beverage and hoping for the best.
Smaller businesses obviously have smaller budgets than the large corporations, and as everybody is aware, search engine optimization is a free way of advertising, and spreading a company name. Through the use to good and cleverly written language, with an honest approach that deals directly with the subject matter, keeping it as just that, the subject a small business stands to gain much more on a comparative size versus profit increase scale than a larger company.
The simple answer is that there is no minimum or maximum amount of search engine optimization, it is simply a case of how much time and effort you are willing to put in.
